Jinniu District is located in the northwest of Chengdu. Being the hometown of jiao zi (the earliest paper currency in China) and with a history of more than 2,000 years, Jinniu has been a business center since ancient times. Benefiting from the ancient Shu civilization and the rich West Sichuan Plain, the hardworking Jinniu people managed this land with their diligence and wisdom, pushed forward the rapid socioeconomic development of this district, and gave the ancient Jinniu a completely new look. Jinniu is reputed as ‘a bright pearl in the Land of Abundance’.

With its advantageous geographical position, fresh air and clean water sources, Jinniu District is an ecological and water resource conservation area in the West Sichuan Plain. The district covers a land area of 108 square kilometers, administers 15 subdistrict offices and 1 provincial-level industrial development zone, and has 110 communities, with 680,000 permanent registered population and about 800,000 floating population.

Jinniu District is readily accessible to the transportation network. It is 20 kilometers away (less than 30-minute drive) from the Chengdu International Airport, the air routes from which lead to 29 international cities and over 70 domestic cities. Inside the district, there not only formed a ‘Six Longitudinal and Six Horizontal’ road grid ( the Six Longitudinal roads refer to Yangxi Line, Chengguan Road, Shangmao Avenue, Shaxi Line, Chengpeng Road and Chuanshaan Road; the Six Horizontal roads refer to the Inner Ring Road, First Ring Road, Second Ring Road, Third Ring Road, Highway for Bulky Cargos and the Around-the-City Expressway), but also has Chengdu North Railway Station, the largest railway station in southwest China connecting with Chengyu, Baocheng, Chengkun and Chengda railway lines, and the Chengbei Passenger Transport Center and Chadianzi Passenger Transport Center with bus routes leading to the west of Sichuan.

The economic strength of Jinniu District is top among the districts of Chengdu, and its economic aggregate accounts for about one ninth of that of Chengdu. Industries in the district are developed rapidly, and the industrial enterprises at or above the designated size are gradually moved to the industrial development zone for centralized development. The four major industries of electric information, biopharmaceutical engineering, food & beverage, and modern manufacturing are becoming the main development force of the district. The tertiary industry of this industry is well developed, the comparative advantages in the catering & recreational industry, commercial & marketing industry, modern logistics and housing industry are prominent, and the district is striving to become the first business district, the first catering district and the first perfect habitat district in Chengdu. The famous market circles and catering/recreational belts in the district, such as the Hehuachi Wholesale Market, the Wukuaishi Medicinal Materials Market, the Yangxi Line Catering Street and the Yi Pin Tian Xia Street, have gathered endless business atmosphere and provided exuberant vital force for the business development of the district. Large international and domestic events such as the First West China Hardware & Electromechanical Expo and the 2005 International Foods & Tour Festival of China were successively held in Jinniu.

Jinniu District attaches great importance to the creation of good human habitat and pioneering environment, and has successively passed the acceptance inspections of National Model City for Environmental Protection and National Landscape City. The district was the first in China to implement the ISO14001 Environmental Management System certification, ISO9001 Quality Management System certification, OHSAS18001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System certification, and became the first district/county-level government in China that has passed the three international certifications as a whole. The excellent and highly efficient administrative services of the government received words of praise from investors and entrepreneurs. As a result, the world’s top 500 enterprises including Walmart (U.S.A.), Auchan (France), Lotus (Thailand) and Anglo Platinum (South Africa) established their presence successively in our district, and a great number of brand enterprises have become the friendly partners of our district.

Jinniu District is provided with profound historical and cultural connotation. There are a number of tourist sports in or neighboring the district. Inside the district, there are the Jinsha Relics Site (part, the center of the ancient Shu Culture), the Yongling Mausoleum (for Emperor Wang Jian in the earlier Shu Kingdom), the Mausoleum of Huang Zhong (a famous general in the Three Kingdoms period), the Tianhui Town (a place where troops of Emperor Tang Xuanzhong were stationed during the An Shi Rebellion), and the Jiulidi Hydrological Relics Site. To the west of the district are Dujiangyan and Jiuzhaigou (both are world natural and cultural heritages), to its south are Buddhist attractions of Mt. Emei and Leshan Grand Buddha, and to its north are the Sanxingdui (a holy place in the ancient Shu Kingdom). The district closely neighbors the Du Fu’s Thatched House (the former residence of Poet Du Fu in the Tang Dynasty), the Wuhou Temple (in commemoration of Zhuge Liang) and the world’s largest Giant Panda Ecological Park. Developing the ecotourism and cultural recreational industries by leveraging the resources in and neighboring our district is becoming one of the new focuses in the industrial development of the entire district. The emerging tourist spots including China’s intangible cultural heritage theme parks of the two-river urban forest, the Tianhui Gingko Park and the Overseas Chinese City Theme Park are injecting new vitality to the charm of Jinniu.

Jinniu District has well-developed education undertaking and strong sci-tech strength. There are six universities (including Southwest Jiaotong University and Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine), more than 80 primary and middle schools (including Chengdu No. 20 Middle School and Chengdu Experimental Foreign Languages School, both are state-level demonstration schools), and a number of research institutes (including the 10th Institute and 29th Institute of Electronics under the Ministry of Information Industry).
